In English, we like to use prepositional phrases 介詞組 to describe people.
Examples:
英文常用後面的修飾語 {介詞開頭的詞組 [= 介詞組] 特別常用}
a person {with no hair}
who's the guy{on the left} 左邊的
Oh. That's my brother. He's a truck driver.
Who's the cute girl{in the green dress?}
Can't you see? That's me{in junior high school} 國中的
Who's the man{with the newspaper in his hand?}
That's my dad.

Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers
When we count things, we say "one, two, three ..."
When we talk about dates, birthdays etc. in English, we need to use ordinal numbers.
Cardinal numbers = one, two, ... ten
Ordinal numbers = first, second, ... tenth
Practice these numbers with a memory game for two players here:
http://www.manythings.org/wbg/numbers-mw.html
More practice with a spelling game here (這個遊戲很刺激,看到 "one" 要趕快拼 "first," 看到 "two" 要趕快拼 "second"。
http://www.manythings.org/wbg/numbers-sw.html
Have fun practicing!

New Year's Song
To get ready for the New Year, here is a song you can learn. Some of the words are a little old. On the right you can see a modern English version:

Collage 4
Here is Nicki's collage. Please look carefully at the collage. Then choose two areas in the picture. Make a comment about each one and ask a question about it.

Collage 3
Everybody should make their own collage. This collage will be your self-introduction. Your classmates will look at the pictures and small things. Then they will learn new things about you.
Come to class with your collage on November 21st. Here is your teacher's collage. Its not beautiful, but it's OK:
Look at the pictures/objects etc. on each collage and ask
Yes-No questions.
Can
you …? Are you …? Have you …? Do you …? Is that ...?
see a picture of a man with a dog.
問:Do you have
a dog?
Well, I used to have
a dog, but now I live on campus, so I can’t take care of a dog. I like doggies
very much.
2)I see a little girl
with a rhino.
問:Have you been
to (Africa)?
Do you like
big animals?
I’ve been to North Africa, but there are no rhinos there. For me, this
picture means: “It’s not good to always think about danger.” Sometimes you need
to trust other people.
3)I see a lot of meat.
問:Do you eat
meat?
Are you a
vegetarian?
I try to eat
vegetarian food every day. In Taiwan,
it’s not easy to find good vegetarian food. My wife says I’m too thin. That’s
why I sometimes eat a little meat.
4)There is a man swimming in this picture.
問:Can you swim?
Yes, I can. I really
enjoy swimming. This picture has another meaning. I am a careful person. Some kinds of danger are not easy to see. That's why I worry a lot.
5)That place looks like a university.
問:Is that your
university?
Not really. I like
to travel and meet people from other countries. Talking with new friends is
fun.

Collage-1
On November 14th, we will be looking at collages (拼貼畫)
"Purple" is a collage made with old photos, stamps, a real butterfly, pieces of cloth and other things.
"Red" has many red things: a Bingo card, a movie ticket, a lipstick container, a spool of thread and other things on it. "Red" is quite beautiful, but you don't need to make your collage so beautiful.

Collage-2
A collage is a special kind of picture. To make a collage, first collect some beautiful or interesting pictures and small things. Look around your house (old magazines, maps or catalogs) or when you go outside (a supermarket flyer, for example). Look inside your desk or in your closet. Think about these things: Do they have special meaning for you?
Here are two more collages:
On November 14th, you will show your collages to your teacher. Please keep them secret!
If there is a problem, your teacher will help you make the collage better. On November 21st, you will all sit in small groups and look at other people's collages. The collages will be used for self-introductions You will ask questions like this.
Q: Are you from Kaohsiung?
A: Yes and no. I was born there, but I grew up in Hsinchu. Have you been to Kaohsiung?

Midterm Reminder-1
On Monday I reminded everybody: our midterm will cover Units 2 and 3 in Touchstone (the small outside reader, life in the USA, will NOT be on the midterm). You need to remember and use:
1) the vocabulary for activities
2) the necessary grammar.
3) conversation strategies on page 8 (and other places)
Also be sure to practice with the listening exercises (online and on your CDROM). The exam will be in two parts, a written test and an oral exam. Our textbook has good pictures for Unit 3 on page 24. Here are some pictures to help you with Unit 2.
This is a conversation fluency test. Be ready to talk about the pictures. Don't just say what they are doing. Who are they? Why are they doing this? Would you like to do it? Why/why not? Are you good at this?
